The Mary Rose

The Mary Rose

Main Rd, Portsmouth PO1 3PY, UK

The Mary Rose was an English warship from the Tudor period. It was in service of King Henry VIII for 34 years and was used in wars against France, Scotland and Brittany.

The ship sank in 1545 during a battle in the Solent, was discovered again in 1972 and was raised in 1982.

An eyewitness told that the Mary Rose had fired all of her guns on one side of the ship and tried to turn to use the other side, but while turning she sank, caught in a strong wind.

Now you can visit the Mary Rose at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and see all the objects they found in the shipwreck. From guns, surgeon's tools to personal items.
