It was a Union victory, with the Federal army defeating the Confederates and forcing them to retreat. The battle was named after the nearby Carnifex Ferry, which was a key transportation route and strategic location in the region. The fighting took place in a heavily wooded area, with the Union forces using their superior artillery to overcome the Confederate defenders. The battle resulted in relatively low casualties, with around 500 total soldiers killed or wounded.
